Revitalization

1. GEM Community Team Revitalization Committee

The Committee was formed October, 2006 and has made great strides.

2. Planned Activities or Projects

Our Committee is preparing for a CDBG grant through the Department of Commerce for downtown revitalization. The Committee Is working with the City’s grant writer, Shawn Charters Consulting, and has currently raised over $125,000 in matching funds.

A. The Committee raised over $8,000 to cover the cost of a hand- painted mural. The mural depicts the area’s history.

B. The Committee has been rejuvenating the Old Livery Barn on 1st Avenue. In 2007 it received its first coat of paint and the second coat was applied in 2008. Also in 2008 a local artist painted a horse-drawn buggy on the face of the barn identifying it as "Bostic’s Livery Barn".

C. The Chamber of Commerce has enhanced its parking lot with an old wagon filled with a variety of live flowers and lights. The Chamber is located on the corners of 1st Avenue and Commercial Street.

D. During the summer months volunteers get together to pick up trash, mow lawns and trim weeds. Students from the Glenns Ferry School District participate with the cleanup and then ended the day with a barbeque.

E. The Committee is planning to place forty dark green, old fashioned street lamps throughout the downtown area. These lamps will be offered for sale and the purchaser has the option of depicting their family or business name on a brick-red banner that hangs from the lamp. In the center of each banner will be one of five icons: wagon, wagon wheel, steam engine, dream catcher or water wheel with the establishment date of 1909.

F. The Committee ordered twenty-five teak wagon wheel park benches pre-sold. They arrived mid June, 2008, and the purchasers will attach an identifying plaque.

G. The downtown business owners have been active in beautifying their store-fronts by planting fresh flowers in wooden wine barrels, while the Chamber and Visitor’s Center spruced up their area with a new sign.
